Breaking Barriers

Breaking Barriers is a three year Community Cohesion project operating on a pan-London basis, organised by London Active Communities. Substance has been researching this project since 2007 as well as providing monitoring and evaluation tools for the projects. Breaking Barriers seeks to explore the role of sports in overcoming barriers between different groups of young people and providing developmental outcomes in education and employment. The project operates in targeted communities in Brent, Southwark and Lambeth providing sports coaching and tournaments, educational projects and training, volunteering and vocational opportunities.

Substance is researching how Breaking Barriers can help deliver: greater community cohesion and multi-cultural participation in football / sport; entry routes into mainstream sports clubs for excluded communities; entry routes into volunteering opportunities and sports coaching / administration for project participants; greater cultural awareness and shared community identity through workshops and community events; improved citizenship and community ownership by project participants.

Substance is working with delivery partners, communities, participants and London Active Communities to devise and deliver an evaluation strategy to measure the impact of the work. The project is due to report in early 2010.
