Supporters Direct

Substance is undertaking a major research project commissioned by Supporters Direct about the social and community ‘value’ of football clubs. This landmark piece of research runs from 2008 to 2009 and investigates different ways in which we can value football clubs and explore the advantages of supporter ownership models for maximising the social value of clubs.

Due to report in early 2010, the research has included:

  • Commissioning of a series of Working Papers on social value
  • Delivery of a bespoke seminar to explore these approaches with practitioners, policymakers and researchers
  • Design of a methodological approach to undertake four in depth case studies
  • Production of a Final Report and a number of toolkits to enable others to undertake research into football club’s social value.

In 2008 we commissioned Substance to undertake some research on the Social Value of Football Clubs. Substance was chosen to due to their rich background of Social Research in Sport with a reputation of having a great understanding of the issues facing communities and how they need to be considered in this type of research. Their knowledge has brought considerable value to the research and the trust developed allows us to take on board their suggestions without questioning their motives.
